Varroa, Foulbrood, Siting and Theft
Settles why imported bee treatment advice fails in South Africa, the statutory answer to foulbrood, and where a hive must actually stand.

#The mite that South Africa never had to treat
Varroa destructor reached South Africa in 1997. Everywhere else it arrived, it rewrote beekeeping into a treatment calendar — monitor, treat, rotate the chemistry, treat again.
Here, the mite load went up, and then it went down on its own. Infestation fell from 7.7 mites per 100 adult bees in 1999 to under 1 mite per 100 workers by 2005. A. m. scutellata had it in hand within six to seven years, and — this is the part that should stop you — treated and untreated colonies developed similarly (University of Pretoria).
The mechanism is not what most people assume. South African bees are not sick bees coping with a heavy mite burden. They remove the mites and suppress the mites' reproductive success. The peer-reviewed conclusion is resistance, not tolerance (Parasitology). The behaviour does the work a miticide does elsewhere.
Monitor anyway, so that you know your own baseline and would notice a change — a sugar-shake or alcohol-wash count. Act only on evidence, and take any treatment decision with the ARC or an experienced local association, never from a calendar written for another continent.
#Two pests that are not emergencies
Small hive beetle (Aethina tumida) is native to southern Africa. Your bees evolved with it. Scutellata colonies remove the eggs and larvae, and damage here is largely confined to colonies that are small, weak or queenless. It is devastating in North America and Australia precisely because those bees never met it (Journal of Integrated Pest Management).
The management answer is colony strength, not a trap or a treatment. A strong queenright colony covering its comb polices its own boxes. Do not over-super a weak colony — you are handing it more territory than it can defend.
Wax moth is the same logic pushed further. In a live colony it is a symptom: it takes weak, queenless or over-supered hives. Where it costs South African beekeepers money is in stored comb and stored supers, which have no bees in them at all — and a catch-and-manage operation accumulates those by design, because every empty catch box and every extracted super is wax moth habitat in your shed.
So the fix is storage discipline, not chemistry: do not store more drawn comb than you will re-use; store supers cold, or stacked in a light, airy space rather than sealed in the dark; freeze frames before storage where you have the capacity; and never overwinter a weak colony on more comb than it can cover — consolidate it instead.
Do not import Northern Hemisphere comb-fumigation practice. Any fumigant is an agricultural remedy under the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act 36 of 1947, residues sit in wax, and wax is both food-contact material and a product you may want to sell. The research found no South African assessment of what wax moth costs here, and no registered South African control product for it — which is itself the answer about where to put your effort.
#The one that is an emergency
American foulbrood (Paenibacillus larvae) is different in kind. It is a spore-forming bacterial brood disease, the spores stay viable for decades, and it is the reason bee movement is controlled.
Its history here is short and specific. Clinical colonies were found in the Western Cape in December 2008 and laboratory-confirmed in February 2009; it had never previously been reported in sub-Saharan Africa. A second upsurge followed in 2015. Clinical signs remain confined to the Western Cape, in A. m. capensis (The Conversation).
#Where the hive actually stands
South African siting decisions are driven by threats that barely appear in imported beekeeping literature. Put them in this order.
#Theft is a budget line, not a misfortune
Hive theft in South Africa comes in three forms: the whole hive taken; the honey taken and the box left; and the honey and the bees taken together, leaving an empty box. Vandalism is separate — complete or partial destruction, sometimes with no theft at all, sometimes done to eliminate a competing beekeeper (Hendricks & Masehela 2024).
Budget that 30 to 40% in before you decide the enterprise is worth doing, not after. Note the structural point behind the crime picture too: beekeepers hide their sites, which makes investigation harder, and one reason they hide is that many are unregistered and would rather not be found by the department either. Registration is what makes a theft docket a real case.
#The badger, the trap and the label that failed
Honey badgers open hives. That is a genuine loss and the reason for the raised, strapped stand. What follows is not permission to trap — it is exposure.
#What to do on Monday
Throw away the imported treatment calendar and put the money into a strapped stand, a firebreak and concealment instead. Write your theft and vandalism budget line at 30 to 40% of operating cost and see whether the enterprise still works. And if you are anywhere near the Western Cape, learn the ropiness test now, before you need it — because the only lawful move after a positive is a phone call.

3Where should the first hive on a Gauteng smallholding go?
Why: Visibility from a road is the biggest theft risk, and proximity to the house or to workers' routes turns scutellata defensiveness into a liability problem. Maize is a trap, not a resource — wind-pollinated, no nectar, poor pollen. Bees do need water within roughly 100 m, but sharing the stock trough puts defensive bees exactly where people and animals must go every day.
