Draught Oxen and Animal Traction
Settles what an ox span still does in South Africa, and whether it can be defended against the minimise-disturbance principle.

#Thirty-six hectares standing in the yoke
Six oxen in the yoke is six Large Stock Units standing in your yard — the LSU is defined as a 450 kg ox, so a span converts almost exactly. On the departmental Grassland-biome mean of 6 ha/LSU, that span draws on roughly 36 hectares of grazing capacity every day of the year, for work concentrated into one season (DALRRD). Nobody costs a span that way, which is why the argument for it usually sounds better than it is.
Animal traction is not a museum piece here. It is in real, current use — and it deserves the same evidence test as everything else in this course, rather than being waved through because it has no exhaust pipe.
#What a span actually is
The Eastern Cape is where the SA evidence sits. Fieldwork in the former Ciskei and Transkei, and a later case study in the Ndabakazi villages near Butterworth, record a system with a definite shape (Development Southern Africa; Ndabakazi case study):
- Ploughing and harrowing are done with spans of four or six, and six is preferred.
- Cultivation, seeding and carting are done with a single pair.
- Cows are used to make up short spans where there are not enough oxen.
- Training takes about three to four weeks.
- Animals are yoked behind the horn and worked in line to voice.
Read the last two points together: the span is worked by voice, from behind, in line. The operator trains animals to respond to sound and position rather than to force — the low-stress handling this module argued for at the crush, applied to work instead of movement.
#The grazing bill nobody adds up
The SA Large Stock Unit is a 450 kg animal eating about 9 kg of dry matter a day (Jordaan et al. 2021); an ox in the yoke is at least that, and none of the SA sources measures how much more a working animal eats. Six oxen therefore eat roughly 54 kg of dry matter a day, 19.7 tonnes a year, and at 6 ha/LSU they occupy about 36 hectares of grazing capacity that is not carrying breeding cows. On a 100 ha Highveld holding, that is more than a third of the farm's carrying capacity committed to traction. Run the same sum on your own land-type figure from the CARA grazing-capacity map rather than on the biome mean — the department publishes 6 ha/LSU as a Grassland average, and national polygon values range from 1.5 to 140.
The second cost is timing. That spring ploughing window falls at green-up — the end of the dry season, after months of standing hay and the winter protein gap of Module 6. You are asking for hard, sustained work at the leanest point of the year. That makes the span a supplementation decision before it is a harness decision, and the composition of that supplement is a job for your veld analysis and a nutritionist, not for a course.
#Does it pass principle 2?
#The law, and where welfare actually fails
The offence that catches people is not cruelty in the dramatic sense. It is working an unfit animal, and unfitness here is usually made of two ordinary things.
The SA field data on working animals is one study, and it is about donkeys, not oxen: Wells and Krecek at Moretele in North West — 20 owners, 102 donkeys, fieldwork in 1995/96 (JSAVA 72(1):37–43). Small, old, local, and still the best thing available. Its most useful finding is blunt: the conditions owners reported most often were ticks, wounds and harness sores. The commonest welfare failures on SA working animals are failures of tack and hygiene, not exotic disease. Nobody has run the equivalent study on ox spans, so read it as the closest available evidence rather than as a measurement of your span.
The same paper is the source of the often-repeated figure of more than 300 000 working or draught equids in South Africa, and it needs a caveat: that sentence sits in the paper's introduction as a secondary citation, not as its own finding, and the fieldwork is three decades old. Use it to say working animals are not marginal here. Do not use it as a current count.
#The comparison that has never been published
This lesson does not end with a table of rands per hectare for a span against a tractor, because that table does not exist. No South African cost or output comparison of the two could be located — not a partial one, not an old one.
So the choice is made on context, not on a published margin: how much land, how much cash, what skills are on the farm, what breaks and who can fix it, and whether a contractor will arrive in your planting window. Those are legitimate grounds, but they are not evidence, and anyone who says the numbers favour oxen is telling you about their farm rather than about a study. If you do run a span, record hours worked, hectares covered and what the animals ate to do it. That is the missing number, and the people who could produce it are already doing the work.

Why: Removing the diesel is a real gain, but it answers a different question. Tillage opens the soil, cuts the living root and removes cover whatever is on the front of the implement. The honest defence of animal traction is narrow use — a fodder strip, a small planted block — not a claim that the tillage stopped mattering. -
2Which of these is the offence most likely to catch a working-ox operation under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962?
Why: Section 2(1)(i) is the traction-specific provision, and in practice unfitness is made of harness sores, wounds and poor condition rather than anything dramatic. Section 2(2) also deems an owner to have permitted an offence that reasonable care and supervision could have prevented, so putting a herder in charge does not move the exposure off the owner. -
3Your neighbour argues oxen are cheaper than a tractor because they cost nothing to run. What is the first number you should put to him?
Why: Oxen do not cost nothing to run; they cost grazing, every day of the year, for work done in one season. That is the cost line that never appears in the argument. And the third option is a trap — no South African cost or output comparison of a span against a tractor could be found, so anyone quoting one is quoting their own farm.
