Animal Health as an Ecological Problem

Most SA animal health failures are management failures with a pharmaceutical bill attached. This module builds the argument once — ticks and endemic stability, acaricide resistance, worms and refugia, whether your remedy still works, the duty to report, and the cold chain — so that every species module afterwards carries only what is genuinely species-specific.

  1. 27 Endemic Stability and the SA Tick Picture Settles the concept that changes SA dipping decisions, the trial that complicates it, and which ticks carry what. Define endemic stability and state the exposure threshold it depends onIdentify the tick species on your own animals by life cycle and seasonExplain why dipping harder can raise the number of animals that die 15 min
  2. 28 Acaricide Resistance and the Move to Strategic Dipping Settles how much acaricide resistance exists in SA, how to read the two survey types without confusing them, and how to transition off intensive dipping. Read a South African acaricide resistance figure correctly against its survey designRotate by chemical group rather than by brand nameRun a staged transition off intensive dipping, with abort criteria written down in advance 13 min
  3. 29 Worms, Refugia and Targeted Selective Treatment Settles why treating every animal every month destroys the drenches you already own, and what to do instead. Define refugia and state what it protectsSet a grazing residual that lowers infective larval intakeCorrect the myth that cattle and small stock do not share worms 13 min
  4. 30 Does Your Remedy Still Work? FAMACHA and the FECRT Settles how a farmer finds out whether a drench still works, and what FAMACHA cannot see. State which parasites FAMACHA is blind to, and whyInterpret a faecal egg count reduction test against the three-band ruleAvoid retiring a drench that is still working 14 min
  5. 31 Controlled Disease and the Duty to Report Settles who must report what, to whom and when, why suspicion alone triggers the duty, and how FMD has redefined the SA market. State what triggers the reporting duty and who it bindsDistinguish a controlled disease from a notifiable one, and name the different addressee for eachWork through the notification steps that follow a report and are routinely forgotten 14 min
  6. 32 Vaccines, the Cold Chain and the Label Is the Law Settles the hardest cold chain in SA agriculture, who may lawfully put the needle in, and the medicines law behind every treatment decision. Handle a live blood vaccine without destroying it, at the level of principleState who may lawfully administer which vaccine, by reading the regulation rather than guessingApply the medicines law to an off-label treatment question 15 min
